In theory, a legislation that works to improve childrens' achievement in education through an increased standardized testing system sounds like a good idea! I mean, even the name "No Child Left Behind" sounds like a real winner. But since Bush passed this legislation in 2001, not much has shown that this law is working. Students have been enundated with standardized tests (up to seven per year in the state of Texas alone!) and artistic development in K-12 environments has dwindled to near extinction.
NCLB has placed such an importance on math, science and social studies through standardized tests and has not taken into consideration that some children learn best through other methods. What about progress? Do all children HAVE to perform on the same level? Why can't learning be objective to a certain extent? There is such a fine line between feeding students real information for real life application and feeding students information needed to make a passing grade on the upcoming TAKS test. Don't get me wrong, I believe in standardized testing, but when is enough enough? When will teachers be given the artistic freedom in their classrooms that they deserve? When will students be allowed to move at their own pace? Does everything have to be so black and white?
